Benke Carlsson / Hop Louie (Dokument Press, ISBN 978 91 85639 30 4, RRP £16.95)The first step in street art is to get out there with something. That's what gives you the buzz to carry on to bigger and better projects. Its easy to be down on books that tell you how to do supposedly simple things such as cutting a stencil by thinking they stifle the creative process. That thinking, however, ignores the fact that you can always learn something from someone who's been around the block a few times - and the people chosen by the authors of this book to explain common street art techniques have a lot of 'previous' between them. So when Snub23 says "always keep your spare hand in front of the blade so if you slip you don't cut your hand" he's talking from past painful experiences which you don't have to repeat. Some of the advice is pretty detailed - there's even a recipe for poster paste included. Of course you may be thinking "I'll save myself a lot of bother and nip down to B&Q and buy a pack of Solvite" but they won't tell you to mix in wood glue to make it stick to unvarnished wood or that a tablespoon of sugar makes the paste stickier. I'd like to have seen some more advice on evading getting caught and there's really very little on spray can techniques but this book is a useful source of information for those starting out and even if you don't immediately go out and change your neighbourhood the artists involved have provided a great deal of pretty pictures for you to look at.
